Well, today is the day. It’s finally over. In just three short hours my tether comes off, they hand me my discharge papers, and I walk out the door a free man! My discharge was actually Saturday, but since they don’t work Saturday, they made me wait for today at noon. I wasn’t happy about the wait but it’s over and I’m ecstatic.
As I drew closer and closer to the finish line, I had to keep reminding myself not to get cocky. I’ve seen several parolees get sent back to prison with only days and sometimes hour left on their parole. One guy was in a high-speed pursuit just a week before he would have been free.
For those of you out there who are close to finishing, please keep your eye on the prize.Don’t get sloppy toward the end. Your agent will violate you. For those of you just beginning your parole, it is possible to complete. I’m proof of that. For those of you already off parole, congratulations. Completing parole is no small accomplishment. The odds are stacked against us.
And once you’re free don’t ever go back! Best of luck to all of you.
